Model Railroad Clubs. Are They A Waste Of Time Or Worth Joining?

by Mike S

Whether it is worth your joining one of the many model railroad clubs really depends on you and the particular club you want to join. Some are obviously better than others and some are focused on particular scales or operating systems. However, overall they are a great idea for anyone who mixes well with others and is open to sharing ideas and learning.

The interesting aspect to the hobby of model railroading is that you never stop learning. Even beginners to the hobby can offer design ideas to the more experienced model railroader.

That's the great thing about this hobby; you think you know everything, but the subject is so vast that there is always something new to learn. Trouble is; we get set in our ways and sometimes clever ideas that others might be using get overlooked in favor of the methods we've always used. Unfortunately that is a bit like an ostrich burying its head in the sand, and it can severely limit development in the hobby. In summary, working with blinkers on can lead to missed opportunities.

That's where networking with other enthusiasts in the hobby can be a huge advantage. Pooling the knowledge and skills of members in a model train club can benefit everyone involved. Why reinvent the wheel when another model railroader has probably already spent hours, days, or weeks solving the particular problem.

Local model railroad clubs are a perfect venue for networking, but so too are online model train clubs. The local clubs have the advantage of chatting with a small group face to face and possibly working on a club layout project together.

Online clubs are usually much bigger and have the advantage of tapping into clever ideas from model railroaders from around the world. These online clubs often give members access to online tutorials, track plans and other resources all accessible anytime of the day or night.

Many people belong to both local and online clubs, because they get different things from each.

There is a sense of community when enthusiasts share a common interest, and take it from me, the model railroading community is alive and well. Friendships made online through this type of relationship could well last a lifetime.

The enthusiasm of other members stops the enthusiasm of others from waning. So joining an online model train club (or one of the local model railroad clubs) can indeed benefit everyone involved.

There are thousands of model railroad clubs scattered all around the globe. Some have only a handful of members and others are much bigger. Some local clubs limit themselves to just one scale or operating system, whereas the online model train clubs can cover all scales and operating systems, due to the large number of members worldwide. Read more below.

Regardless of the size and makeup, they all have one thing in common - a love of this great railroading hobby. These clubs also share a desire to improve and grow the hobby by sharing knowledge and skills with one another. So, if you're even just remotely interested in getting involved in model railroading, joining a society or online club should be a priority.

Investing the time joining a club and connecting with other members will be well worth the effort. However with that said; there is nothing wrong with working alone, it is just that networking and sharing ideas has so many advantages.
