How Will Speed Reading Help During the Recession?

by Kristjan-Olari Leping

Is your company downsizing? Are the personnel costs about to be cut? Wages and bonuses to be lowered? This situation is reality for many people. What can you do in order to help yourself?

The present world-wide recession is probably the worst since 1930s. Most of the developed countries are still in a economic downturn, which has endured for a year and there is still much instability in the financial sector. It means that jobs for many people are under threat. More and more people are losing hope in the future.

The ongoing crisis is a result of a long economic prosperity, which caused heavy loaning and consumption. In the good times the demand for products and services was high, which meant that it was relatively easy for companies to earn profits. That led to inefficiency for many firms. There was no sharp need to optimize costs as even if a firm had had high and pointless costs they were still able to make nice money.

But it has all gone now. In order to survive the recession companies have to cut down the costs. If it is not possible to sell so many products now, then it means the income is lower and therefore the costs have to be lower for earning profit. As wage costs are one of the major sources of expenditures then firms are looking for ways to operate with the lower number of employees. In the new economic situation there has to be more revenue generated per one employee, which means that workers have to me more productive.

So in order to prevent being fired, you have to me more productive. How can you achieve that? One possibility for that is to increase your reading speed. For many jobs, you will spend considerable amount of working time on reading tasks. For example, you have to read email, product documentation, invoices, manuals etc. In case of a typical office worker reading can take 20-30% of working time. It means that if you could read faster then you can end up with more work done at the end of your work day. Faster readers will produce more output.

How can you be a faster reader? You will have to learn to speed read for that. It means that you will learn special techniques how you can obtain information from text considerably faster than an average person does. You can increase your reading speed by learning to read with out regression, making previews before reading and optimizing your eye movements while reading.

As reading speed affects productivity then in case of all other things equal, employees with higher reading speed are more productive. In the situation where companies are downsizing, faster readers have higher probability of retaining their jobs. Learn to speed read and impress your boss with your reading skills. By doing so you may not only prevent getting fired by this but gain promotion or wage bonus.

Recession provides good opportunities for upgrading your skills as the workloads are lower than it boom times. It means that you have more time available for learning at it would be wise to use it. The problem is that during those hard times companies may be not so willing to pay for the training cost. What can you do then? If your boss will not pay for it, then you can pay those expenses out of your own pocket. It may seem costly to cover your training costs on your own, but it actually pays off. If you increase your productivity then in the long run you will not only keep your job but you will end up with higher income. I am pretty sure that your boss will be delighted that you have invested in yourself and it will benefit your career progress.
