A Brief History Of The Model Train Railroad

by Frank Keenan

Train Railroads have a history of more than one century from now, and historically they are linked to some other inventions. Train was maybe the most common means of transportation within Europe countries, but also in other continents like Asia and America. We see often trains in old films, or those referring to last century, and mainly those romantic ones or warfare ones. Actually train models have had a long history of design, and models have had many changes throughout the years, so starting from the oldest model that was constructed by Edward Bowness in England in 1896, when he first designed the First Complete Model, that was launched to trade of that time, along with some other inventions later, for planes and ships, but he was the pioneer of Train Railroad Model construction, and the first one to found a model, that seemed to work well.

Actually the adoption of the 3/16 inch to One-Gauge set the basis, for all other futures adoptions and additions to the main model design of Edward. Actually the 3/16 inch of height along with the 1.0 inch width and 2.0 depth later, contributed to the adoption by others later of a scale of 5 mm, in all models construction. That's why, as already having a ''perfect'' Railroad Model, all other constructors that followed, based their constructions, on that initial model, from where all other future models derived.

Train Railroad Models have had up to nowadays, and until some years earlier from now, a long design history, where always the new technologies produced, in terms of engines, machines and other secondary devices, were used to improvement of Train Railroad Models, and their design, in terms of speed, resistance capacity, and machine power, so that also due to efforts, of some other constructors, that followed the steps, of Bowness, in Germany after the end of the First World War, and also later between 1939-1946, top Models were built but all of them based on the same ''patents'' and ''formulas'' of the initial construction. We thus have round 1939, the design of locomotive, in USA along with design of other transportation means, such as damp ships, due to the use of damp and all its applications in field of transportation means.

The Railroad Models were perfection Ned after 1960, and Train is still a useful mean of transportation, within countries, in all continents. Although plane has also been invented, and is the most modern transportation mean nowadays, train is still used in many cases, and serves million people daily.

Technology has been developing, and this also has applied to the field of Railroad Models. When we study the history of the Train Railroad Model construction, we easily discover once more, the basic rules that apply to the history of our civilization: Civilization, consists in ''what man added to man'' throughout history. Starting from the mind invention and design of a single engine, adding "a screw'' after ''screw'', we have reached perfection in technology, as technology is part of our civilizations, affecting culture also. And the industry worker, has Equally to use his kind capacities for practical reasons. Anyway, in train models design also, the practicability is always under test.

Most perfect and top rank models nowadays, like the ''metro'' (fast-train), in Paris, also the ''Schnellzug'' (Fastest traib model), in Germany years after the ''Eilzug'' (Rush train), and so many other models are a testimony of man's thirst to knowledge and production.
