Why Train The Shoulders

by Patrick Attlee

This article looks at what makes up the shoulder musclesand why incorporating shoulder exercises into your work outroutine is a good idea. Specific exercises will be coveredin a later article.

The muscles of your shoulder are called the deltoidsordelts. The sit, a bit like a cap on top of your shoulder. You can have a look at them by holding out your arm. Thesemuscles are made up of the top deltoid at the top of theshoulder which is used to elevate your arm; the frontdeltoid is, as the name suggests, on the front of theshoulder and is responsible for the arm moving inwards; theback deltoid at the back of the shoulder is there to movethe arm backwards.

The ball and socket design of your shoulder is what allowsit to move so freely. The end of the arm bone is perfectlyshaped to fit snugly into the shoulder socket. This jointworks on the same principal as the hop joint but it hasmuch more freedom of movement. To stop the ball fromslipping out of the socket you have what are known as therotator-cuff muscles. These muscles are to be found beneaththe delts. They are often neglected in work out routinesand this is the main reason for rotator-cuff injuries. Yourarm would not be able to twist when the elbow is straightif it were not for these muscles. You often see baseballpitchers with these injuries because these muscles are usedextensively during the throwing action.

When you are working out you chest and back, your delts arealso getting a workout but you should also isolate thedelts in your workout program and you will see thefollowing benefits:

1) You will notice a difference in almost every arm motionyou make and weight that you lift. This extends beyond thegym and into every day life. Not only will you be able tolift heavier weights on other exercises, but you will beable to shovel snow easier.

2) Prevention of injuries. As was mentioned earlier, shoulders are in use all the time whenever the arm ismoving so if you are putting stresses on them by doingchest exercises, you can easily cause injury to theshoulder muscles whether you are just getting out of bed,or splitting firewood.

3) Increased self-confidence. Sculpted shoulders make youfeel good whether you are in a lovely bespoke suit, or in atank-top at the beach. People always notice good shouldersand having well trained and healthy specimens at the top ofyour arms can you give you a little spring in your step - achemical-free boost.

Hopefully this has given you an informative introduction tothe shoulder muscles.
