Customizing Your Model Train Display

by Victor Epand

Is there a model train display sitting in your basement or garage gathering dust? Is it feeling lonely and you are feeling guilty because you became bored with it? For a really easy fix to this just give your old display a makeover! You can customize your existing train display without having to totally replace it. This can save you both time and money.

The first thing you must do is to examine your layout. Are the many trees and shrubs? If so you can remove these and place them in a storage container for use when you next decide to do a makeover or build another display. Once you have done this you can examine the remaining structures. If you have a water feature that is emulating a lake you can add or remove lake houses, boat launches and more to it. This will make it have a good deal more character. You might even decide to add a scaled model boat to the feature.

Another customization and make over tip comes with the removal of the vegetation. Once this is completed you can then do a repaint of your base structure and create a different road layout. Once you add back your trees and other vegetation it will look like a whole new display. You can also make a big difference by changing the rock structures on your display. To do this you have a several different options.

Your first option is the addition of moss to the rocks. This is easy to do. All you have to do is to add a little bit of spray adhesive to your model rocks and then press the moss into place. If moss is not your idea of a cool addition then you might want to add a little bit of faux snow to the tops of your tallest hills. Again, if this does not appeal to you then just turn your hills into part of a woodland by adding small trees on the flat parts of the rocks.

Please add
your comments.

The next change you can easily make is to paint your buildings. Change the whole appearance by changing the colors and adding decals or stamps to them so that they look like they have posters on the outside. You can also move them around and give them a different setup. If you have people on your display then you could change them out with others. Again, change the time period and you will change the overall look.

f you want to make a major change in your display then you have one more huge option. You can purchase a new locomotive and cars to go with your newly remade display. This should be a last resort however if you are trying to save money when doing your remodel job.

Remember, your model train display did not build you. You built it. Do not blame your display for not keeping your attention. Get up and do something about it. Customize your display so that it looks just like a new one and give your old hobby a new face.
