These Tiny Z Scale Locomotives And Model Trains Can Fit Anywhere
by Robert R
If you are looking for some of the smallest trains on the market then Z scale locomotives will work perfectly for you. These little engines are 1/220 of the size of real trains that they are modeled after. These tiny things can fit anywhere, from a briefcase to a wreath for Christmas time. Z scale locomotives can be incorporated into nearly everything you see due to their small size. This leaves a lot of room for creativity and designing layouts to fit anywhere.
Even though Z scale trains are very versatile they are not really suitable for anyone with shaky hands or failing eyesight as the scale is very small to work with. Although, in saying that, they are not the smallest trains you can buy. T scale trains coming in at 1:450 scale are the smallest on the market. That's tiny when compared to N Scale at 1:160 and HO Scale at 1:87.
Among the leading manufacturers for Z scale locomotives are Marklin and Micro-Trains. A manufacturer by the name of Tokyo Marui has recently made it on to the market for Z scale locomotives, so keep watch on them as they progress and release models.
Getting started with Z scale trains:
Starter sets are one of the best ways to go when you are just beginning with Z scale. These sets will include everything you will need to be up and running: locomotive, cars, track, power source and controller. All of these parts individually will cost you a large sum of money, so while you are experimenting and learning, choose to do it on a starter set and then get larger.
Starter sets are an exceptional value and can be found for very reasonable prices on multiple websites. One place to start looking for model train sets is eBay. The eBay auction site should have a range of sets for purchase but just be careful with who you buy from. Make sure to check the reviews and know what shipping costs you will be responsible for.
Marklin locomotives:
Z scale originated with Marklin, giving them the upper hand in competition between manufacturers. One thing to note with Marklin is that even though the locomotives are tiny they do not sacrifice performance. The locomotives may seem like toys but they are not that at all.
The German (DB) BR89 0-6-0 model is the smallest Z scale electric locomotive that is available on the market, and it comes with many of Marklin's less expensive starter sets. These sets generally come equipped with the locomotive, one freight car, and a small oval track that is controlled and powered by a 9 volt battery. While the battery set will allow you to transport the train anywhere, it does have a disadvantage because it does not have as much functionality because the battery power will not allow you to move the trains at such a high speed or vary between speeds.
If you prefer a model without a battery, those are available as well. You will need to purchase a model or set that contains a transformer, because that will give you more power and functionality. Battery operated train sets are more of a toy, whereas electric train sets are more suited to serious hobbyists, or those who may want to expand their set.
Micro-Train locomotives:
Micro-Trains Line (MTL) is another manufacturer in Z scale. The one thing about MTL that you should note is that they only carry diesel prototypes. They do not carry any steam locomotives, so if that was what you were interested in then you will want to stick with Marklin.
MTL produces some pretty interesting starter sets as well. MTL produces multiple freight cars to go along with your locomotive as well. Be on the look out for these products by MTL. While they are not as numerous as Marklin they still supply you with a choice other than Marklin. Again, many of these Z scale locomotives can be tracked down on eBay and purchased from multiple sellers.
