The first thing that comes into the mind of many salespeople when they hear of "telemarketing" is "cold calling." However, telemarketing is beyond that. The dread that comes with the fear of being turned down is not present in telemarketing. Unlike high-pressured cold calling where the buyer feels that he is selling, in telemarketing it is all about providing "privileged information" maintaining a positive attitude.

The key to succeeding in telemarketing is to overcome the fear of rejection that many salespeople have developed after years of cold calling.

Here are a few tips on how to do it:

1. Always inform the recipients of your direct mail that you will be calling them within a few days of receiving your letter. If you do this, you won't feel like a stranger when call them.

2. Whenever you are on the phone with a potential buyer, don't make him feel like he is being sold to. Few people like that feeling. Present your sales pitch in such a manner that the buyers feels that you are providing him with useful information. Make them know that you are doing this because you value them and that you would like to help them solve their problems.

3. Make full use of the telephone and the fact that you can talk to someone who can't see how terrified you are. Be confident on the phone and sound like a person who knows his job. Buyers like dealing with people who don't doubt their own abilities. The buyer is not ready to help you help him. No. He wants you to sort out his problems, so be up to the task.

4. Train your staff always to maintain a positive attitude regardless of how many times they are turned down. If your salespeople get bogged down by previous negative conversations, they will end up screwing up the rest of their pitches.

5. Always keep in mind what you want to achieve through your efforts. This is perhaps the most important of all tips. Once you are sure of where you want to go, muster all your efforts towards going there.
