Are you a positive person? Is your focus on the positives in life or the negatives?

Most people spend a lot of time talking about what they don't have in life.

"My husband isn't good looking enough""I want the newest model of that car""I want a better body"

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to want more in life. The search for how to gain confidence is after all, a desire to make things better in one's life. But there comes a point when we need to accept that while we want things to get better, there are also plenty of good things in our life right now.

If we can't take our focus off the negatives in our life, or what is lacking, then we will never be happy. That sounds harsh, but it's true. The fact is, if you think of happiness that is something you achieve in the future, you will be disappointed.

Let's face it, the bigger house, faster car and better looking partner will not give you everlasting happiness. They provide short term happiness, but pretty soon, you have your eye on the even bigger house, the newest model of car and your partner isn't as great as you thought they were.

The focus on what is lacking is a powerful motivator, but it also guarantees that we are never quite satisfied with what we get.

And this points to a deeper truth. That happiness is not out there. It's not something that will be magically handed to you once you get the right combination of status symbols. If you want greater self-esteem, you need to start feeling good about yourself and your life. You need to focus on the positives. This is one of the most powerful confidence tips you can use.

Focus on what is good in your life now. Find happiness in what you have. Take a few minutes to write down things in your life that you are grateful for. Don't stop till you have at least 25 things.

Get specific. Don't just write "family". Write down specific people. Don't just write down "friends". Write down which friends you are grateful for and why.
